Which PROC should review my submission?

Your research project should only be submitted to one PROC for review. Your project may overlap departments and that is okay. The key is that your project is submitted to the PROC that best matches the practice area affected.

  • If the project involves pediatric patients or a pediatric department, regardless of how much involvement, your project should be submitted to the Children’s Hospital of Richmond PROC for review. The only exceptions are for psychiatry and oncology.
  • If your project primarily involves surgical patients or a surgical department, your project should be submitted to the Surgery PROC for review.
  • If your project primarily involves internal medicine patients or an internal medicine department, your project should be submitted to one of the following Internal Medicine PROCs for review based on the practice area affected:
    • Cardiology
    • Hepatology/GI
    • Internal Medicine #3 (Includes Pulmonary, Critical Care, Infectious Disease, Endocrinology, Rheumatology/Allergy/Immunology)
    • Internal Medicine #4 (Includes Nephrology, Hospital Medicine, General Medicine, Hematology, Palliative, Geriatrics, Sickle Cell)
  • If your project primarily involves nursing or another health profession (i.e. PT, OT, SW, RRT, etc), your project should be submitted to the Nursing & Health Professions PROC for review.
  • If your project primarily involves psychiatry patients or a psychiatry department, including pediatric psychiatry, your project should be submitted to the Psychiatry PROC for review.
  • If your project primarily involves physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) patients or a PM&R department, your project should be submitted to the PM&R PROC for review.
  • If your project will take place at the Sheltering Arms Institute (SAI), your project should be submitted to the SAI PROC.
  • All oncology-related projects should continue to be submitted to the Massey Cancer Center Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee (PRMC) for review. PROC submission is not required.
  • All projects not falling within a pre-specified PROC should be submitted to the General/Interdepartmental PROC for review.

If you are still unsure of which PROC to submit your project to for review, please consult with the Director of Clinical Research, Dr. Mary Harmon, at mary.harmon@vcuhealth.org
